On August 21st the Moon's shadow passed over all of North America. The path of the umbra, where the eclipse is total, stretched from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. This was the first total solar eclipse visible in the contiguous United States in 38 years. We decided that we weren't going to be like the other crazy people who drove up to Idaho to see it. We stayed home. The boys were at school and watched the NASA live feed so they wouldn't burn their eyes and Ricky and I, totally unprepared with the right viewing glasses, watched it from our driveway. There are not many cloudy days in Arizona so we were shocked and disappointed when this special day also drew lots of clouds. I took a few pictures with my phone and then some family members who were in the path, sent us some pictures as well. I'm sure it would have been cool to see the total blackout but maybe next time we'll make the trip.
