Day three was our long day of driving. We had one main stop we wanted to hit but other than that, the goal was to get across Wyoming. Thankfully, Lincoln was able to sleep quite a bit on this stretch and that and time is what he needed to start feeling better. Logan was a trooper and really well behaved in the car. They mostly watched movies, ate snacks, and played iPads. Our big stop for the day was Devil’s Tower National Monument. I wasn't sure what to expect other than it was just a big rock formation. It exceeded my expectations. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. It was massive and an interesting shape. It was such a peaceful area - out in the middle of nowhere. There was an hiking trail that surrounded the monument that we walked a portion of. We saw deer and beautiful views of the valley below. The incline of the trail allowed us to gain elevation taking us closer to the formation. The boys loved hiking the trail and climbing the rocks. Lincoln told me that it was a miracle that he was blessed to feel good enough to get out and explore with us.
Knowing it had already been a long day, we wanted to stay close to the tower for the night and I thought it would be fun to have the small town cowboy-like experience so I booked us a room in Hulett, WY. It was about ten minutes from the monument and the town was even smaller than I expected. We had two choices for places to eat in town. One was a cafe and one was a bar/restaurant. We chose the cafe. I would venture to say we chose wrong. There were a million flies flying around, the food was not so good and the service was poor. The only good thing that came from it was that it gave us some good memories to look back and either laugh or shake our heads at.
There was only one actual hotel in town, which is the Best Western that we stayed at. It turned out to be the worst hotel of our stay. Our room was on the second floor, with no elevator access so we had to lug all of our stuff upstairs. There was no hot water to shower with. The breakfast was terrible. The ice machine was broken, the workers weren’t helpful and parking was rough. I have to admit that we were happy to be leaving Hulett and getting on to more normal and populated civilization.
