Grand Canyon Caverns (November 18th)

We wanted to have some fun things planned for Tutus visit with us. We also thought it would be fun to do things none of us had done before. After a little planning, we decided to take our adventures up to Northern Arizona for a weekend. The first stop on our trip (after a memorable ride to get there on a desolate dirt road through the desert in the middle of nowhere) was at the Grand Canyon Caverns. They actually weren't all that close to the Grand Canyon at all but it was definitely a giant cavern. The neat thing about this place is that inside the cavern, they've created a unique opportunity to dine inside the cavern. A little restaurant, Caverns Grotto, was created that has about four tables and requires reservations to eat there. What a neat experience this was. The food was fine, nothing to rave about, but the opportunity to hang out in the cave and eat was really fun. We were the only ones there at the time we had lunch. We took tons of pictures and had a great time.

Following lunch, we had a full tour of the cave that took about 45 minutes to get through. There were a couple of big rooms that actually were stacked with emergency drinking water and dry food as a federally dedicated emergency shelter. We've now explored quite a few caves and each one has distinct memorable features that make them all unique. A restaurant inside may be the most exciting.

Tutus at the restaurant.

Our family at the restaurant with the great room of the cave behind us.

Family shot.
The restaurant was elevated above the main entrance to the cave.

Pulled pork, salads, sandwiches and lots of pie for dessert.

On the tour later in the day inside the cave.
