January 2, 2018 - In Kauai, Chocolate Tour

Another full day of activities were planned to maximize our last full day on the island of Kauai. We found Steelgrass Farms which is a family owned property that grows a variety of exotic fruits and chocolate. Yes, they grow chocolate!! It's a fruit! Who knew?! We bundle up and sprayed ridiculous amounts of bugs spray in preparation for our three hour tour through the farm, which also included taste testing chocolate from around the world. It was a very educational tour and I was so proud of the boys for hanging in there and participating through all of it. We walked about a mile through the property to see different fruit trees and stop and taste the exotic fruits. Logan was a champ and tried everything. Lincoln was a little more hesitant in tasting all of the fruits but he did try all of the chocolates. We learned a lot of had a great time trying new things.
Before our walk Uncle Toby pushed Logan on this rope swing that was on the property.

We tried raw sugar cane with lemon.
These are vanilla beans.

I don't remember what each of these things are but we tried them all. Some were definitely better than others.

These red/orange pods coming off the trees are cocoa pods.

This is the inside of a cocoa plant. These seeds inside are the raw cocoa bean that is used to make chocolate. I thought it was too bitter to really eat. Tutu ate a dozen of them.

We tried each of these chocolates in random order and had to guess what we were eating. The white chocolate was quite delicious so we bought a few of the few full size bars to take home.
At the very end of the tour, our guide was so kind and had an employee chop down a coconut for the boys and open it so that they could try the coconut water right from the coconut. They liked the idea of drinking right from the coconut but didn't actually like the water.
With our stomachs filled with fruit and chocolate we were all feeling a bit sick and went straight to lunch to get some healthy food in us before our long awaited helicopter ride. This is one of my favorite places to eat in Kauai because the atmosphere is fun. It's right down town and in an open air covered record floor balcony.
